Dear sisters and brothers:
We invite you to join us in forming a Tucson coalition to stop the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
The TPP is described as NAFTA on steroids. It was negotiated behind closed doors with hundreds of corporate advisers but in secret from the public. It is expected to go to congress for an up-or-down vote during the lame-duck session after the elections in early November.
The TPP has been called a global corporate coup because of the threats posed to the sovereignty of nations and the democratic rule of law. Provisions in the TPP support Big Pharma price-gouging, threaten internet freedom, food safety, healthcare, financial regulation, worker’s rights, and the environment.
It is a trade agreement among twelve Pacific Rim countries: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia. Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam and the United States—representing about 40% of the world trade.
It is a companion to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) which is a similar agreement with the European Union and a companion to the Trade in Services Agreement (TISA) which calls for the privatization of all public services.
We are planning a series of protests, demonstrations and direct actions and invite you to bring your own ideas to the first meeting:
