New York Metro Trade Justice Announces New TPP Events

Our friends at TradeJustice.net asked us to share this list of actions and events with you.

Happy New Year! 2016 will be THE critical year in the fight to stop TPP with President Obama planning to sign and send TPP to a vote in Congress this year.

Actions

Organizations – last chance to sign the national sign-on letter vs. TPP! Plus – endorse two upcoming forums on TPP!
Now that the final text of TPP has been released, civil society must stand united against this assault on jobs, public interest regulation, information freedom, and democracy itself. Our friends at Citizens Trade Campaign are asking organizations tosign a letter that will stand as a statement of unity by social movements opposed to this rotten backroom trade deal for the 1%. Please ask your union local or community organization to sign the letter no later than Tuesday, January 5th at 5PM. We also need organizational endorsers for two upcoming forums on TPP – on January 21st in Jackson Heights, Queens and on January 28th in Manhasset, Long Island. Please ask your organization to fill out this endorsement form to show your support for these events!

Your chance to officially tell the US Trade Representative what you think about the TPP
According to the Federal Register, the Office of the US Trade Representative announced on Dec. 28 that it is seeking public comments on the impact of the TPP Agreement on U.S. employment, including labor markets. € The open comment period extends until January 13, 2016. It is critical that as many people as possible write to them about this. (In 2014, millions of public comments pouring into the FCC saved the Internet). Here’s how you do it.

1timeTell Time Magazine that TPP Ratification Is Nothing to Look Forward To!

Time magazine has a 2016 prediction quiz at the end of their current issue. One of the questions asks readers to pick the “unexpected fortunate event of 2016.” Their answer? Ratification of TPP by all participating nations. Not only do they not disclose that their parent company, Time Warner, is a member of the US Business Coalition for TPP, but they shamelessly run a full page advertisement on the page facing the quiz for Gilead HIV meds — without ever mentioning that drug companies who want to maintain high prices on patented HIV meds(at the expense of people who will die because they can’t afford their medicines) will be one of the main beneficiaries of TPP. Write a letter to demand that Time address who passage of TPPÂ at http://ideas.time.com/submit-a-letter/.

Protect Environmental and Food Safety Standards — Tell Your Members of Congress to Reject TPP!
Something very unCOOL just slimed through Congress courtesy of the World Trade Organization (WTO). A provision to eliminate county-of-origin labels (COOL) for beef and pork labels that consumers rely on in the grocery store was tucked into the omnibus government spending bill that Congress passed. The impetus for repealing COOL was the WTO authorizing more than $1 billion in annual trade sanctions against the United States, despite the fact that nine in 10 Americans support the commonsense consumer protection. This is just a taste of the trade-pact assaults we’ll see on the policies we count on for safe food, a clean environment and so much more if the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is enacted. Urge your members of Congress to reject the TPP and its attacks on our laws. The TPP includes even more constraints on food safety and rollbacks of environmental standards. And it would permit individual foreign corporations to launch direct attacks on our public interest policies. Even if you”ve already taken action on this issue, please do so again today now that COOL actually has been repealed under orders from the WTO.
