On March 18, 2015, an anti-Fast Track leafletting and visibility action took place outside the Federal Building in Albany, New York. Both Sen. Charles Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand have offices in the building. The action was sponsored by MoveOn.org and the Solidarity Committee of the Capital District, with support from the Albany and Schenectady Labor Councils.
About 20 persons participated, in cold and windy weather. Keeping Occupy Albany’s large anti-TPP banner from blowing away was a challenge. The banner reads, “Corporate Coup Against People & Planet – – Stop the TPP.”
The local MoveOn organizer had contacted the Senate offices ahead of time to let them know we would be there, and a staff member from each office came outside to talk with us. Sen. Schumer is a member of the Senate Finance Committee which would have a key role in a Fast Track bill. Sen. Schumer’s staff member said that the Senator has been working behind the scenes against the TPP but is not yet willing to make public statements directly opposing it. Sen. Gillibrand, according to her staff person, does not have a position on Fast Track at present.
